ProgramCritique.com Review:

Backends are typically the postscripts at the end of a program. If a purchased low cost program contains at the end of it, another item, which is more costly than the one purchased, then it is called a backend.

In the most literal sense, the expressions “front end” and “back end” imply the preliminary and the conclusion stages of a progression. These terms are meant to convey a specific meaning in a specified area. The universal notion is that the “front-end” is the collector i.e. its function is to amass input from the consumer. This could be in any form. The “front end” then dispenses the data in a specified way so that way that it coincides to the design that the back-end can interpret and use. The relation between the front end and the back end is that they are typically interfaces.

In software programs too, the front-end is the part that interacts directly with the user, and the back-end is the division where the information from the input is processed and formulated into a particular output. This division of software systems helps to maintain organized division of labor by keeping the various components of the system separated. Theoretically, most programs are separated into front end and back end. However, in majority of the programs, the "back-end" is usually concealed from the user. On the other hand, some programs (for e.g. graphical user interface (GUI), is built on top of a command-line interface), are written just to act as a front-end to an additional, already readily available program.

As for the consumer, he is benefited and stands to gain in the sense that if he is satisfied with the low cost program, he may be willing to spend more to gain more information and, if he is not satisfied, he need not spend further. The credibility of back-ends, similar to other products, depends on the reliability and authenticity of the organization selling the program.
