ProgramCritique.com Review:

Web Hosting is nothing but a service that offers individuals and organizations with an online system for storing data and images that are available via the Internet. A web host is one who provides space on their servers for use by customers and offers Internet connections, in a data center. These companies can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers not belonging to them to be located in their data center. Hosting can be of three types, self-hosting where the software makes it possible to recompile source code, including all the necessary tool chains needed for its compilation, virtual hosting where servers host more than several domain names on the same computer and IP address and web Hosting.

There is a wide variety of Hosting services available, the most basic being web page Hosting. In this, the pages can be uploaded via FTP and are usually hosted free by ISPs or available on sites like GeoCities or Yahoo! However, company sites are more complex and require database support and application development platforms. These facilitate script installations and content management. The host can provide a Web interface for managing the Web server and e-mail.

There are several types of Hosting available. Free Hosting is for personal web pages, which has plenty of restrictions. Image Hosting helps upload images via hot linking so that one can upload the required images on the host’s server, and save space on one’s personal server. In shared hosting, one has to share the server with many other sites and bear the risk of the site crashing due to problems in some other site. Clustered hosting gives all clients the advantage of a dedicated server where security, load balancing and other resources are available at affordable prices. Reseller hosting is for smaller hosts who distribute the space and bandwidth among several users on the same server. In Virtual Private Server (or Virtual Dedicated Server) hosting one physical server houses many Virtual Environments, which behave exactly like an isolated stand-alone server. A dedicated hosting system is the most expensive hosting service where one has a dedicated server and there are hardly any restrictions. Colocated Hosting is an ideal service where one purchases a server, which is installed at the host’s data center.

Virtual Hosting can be name-based, and IP address or IP-based. Name based virtual hosts use several host names for the same IP address. Therefore, when one is connected to a server the browser sends the address that the user typed into their browser's address bar to the server, which can find out the required web site, as well as page, to show the user.

In IP based virtual hosting, every web server has a different IP address and it uses this address to decide which web site to show the user. However, virtual hosting fails if the Domain Name System (DNS) is not properly functioning and it cannot host multiple secure websites running Secure Sockets Layer or SSL. However, both these problems can be overcome by using workarounds.

There are a few significant facts to be kept in mind before choosing a hosting service. The host should have Multiple T connections and be close to the Internet. They should offer good customer service and provide technical support whenever required, at a reasonable price. It is important to know the number of sites and the capacity of the server being used for hosting. Thus, one should finalize on a Hosting service based on one’s individual requirements.
