These investors are called angels because it is perceived that they save loss-making firms with both finance and expertise when no one else will. Angel investments bear very high risk, and therefore need a very high return on investment. Sourcing of funds from them can be expensive, but cheaper options like bank financing are not available for most early stage ventures. They are often retired business owners or executives, who can train young entrepreneurs and learn new market technologies from them.
