Banner Ads are those headlines or logos on web pages that direct visitors to particular products or services. A click on such an ad leads to the webpage of the company offering its products or services.

Several Internet companies were making money solely through banner ads in the 90s. They used to carry advertisements for all kinds of companies on their sites and make money out of it. The scene was so that any company would advertise on any site. They were under the impression that it would help in reaching out to many people.

It did not take the companies too long to realize that the practice was not bringing them good results. They started to look for ways to increase their profits. They started cutting down costs on all aspects of production including - investments, staff and Banner Ads as well.

However, some crafty marketing individuals had other ways to look at it. They adopted targeted marketing approach to make the most of the drop in Banner Ad pricing. Earlier, advertisers hardly used to think about the right kind of a website for advertising. Therefore, there would be dumb placing of advertisements such as cookware on flash games website and liquor on books website.

The new marketers realized that mass marketing to a large population using Banner Ads does not work. There was a need of carefully choosing the target audience and approaching them through their kind of websites. Demographic similarity between the target audience and the audience of a website is necessary for effectiveness of Banner Ads. Banner Ads usually give good results if the target audience is considerably large. It is also necessary to make sure that a website attracts enough traffic to place an ad on it. However, a marketer should always remember that Banner Ads should not be the only promotional tool for him. It is important to combine other methods with it to have a desirable result.
