Dale Calvert was not the one to follow the usual practice of first completing formal education and then finding a job with a good company and settling down. He wanted to own his own business. Initially he started with IBM but later left it to start his own business - Shaklee Corporation in 1984. He initially slogged working eighty hours per week and for the next three years, put back every penny he earned into his business.
