Review:
Occasionally I listen to Bob Brinker as I drive I-5 in California (KGO San Francisco). Often I have to change the channel because his droning voice makes me sleepy. When I perk up, however, usually it's because I've become irate over one of his simplistic explanations for society's financial "ills." Yesterday he took on public employees -- teachers, firefighters, police, etc -- who, he believes, drink from the public trough, while those darned unions are responsible for corporate ills regarding pensions. I quickly awoke from my stupor. OK, I'm a public employee -- a semi-retired history professor -- with a self-interested view on pensions. However, he failed to address any of the subtle nuances attached to this issue, a not uncommon occurrence in his black and white world. For example, he failed to note that far fewer people would choose careers in such fields as teaching, police work, etc., if it were not for the prospect of golden years down the road. Oh no. It's those pesky workers who are to blame for virtually all of the public sector's financial troubles. Sure, some folks abuse this system. But the tendency breaks the other way as well. How many tax-hating conservatives -- even those who don't need the money --are first in line for FEMA money after some disaster. Brinker also predictably targets unions, failing to mention that many corporations in the 1980s and 1990s pushed unions to take pay concessions with the understanding that the money would go into pensions instead. I realize that this critique is falling into a black hole as far as Brinker is concerned. Apparently he has no email address to where we small fry can confront or challenge him on any of his views. Thanks for providing this forum.
